Bardez conspiracy 1822

Synopsis
The Bardez conspiracy, or Bardezada, took place amidst the political and military turmoil that ensued after the arrival in Goa of the news of the Portuguese Liberal Revolution of 1820. Tensions escalated in 1822 after Bernardo Peres da Silva, a prominent Goan political leader, was elected to the Constitutional Assembly in Lisbon, alongside another native catholic, Constâncio Roque da Costa, and a well-known Portuguese radical. The election triggered a reaction from conservative factions, especially among the military establishment, mainly of European origin. In April, after a series of protests by the indigenous elites of the province of Bardez against the rejection of their candidate to the provisional government, the military-backed ruling junta disbanded the local militia and ordered the arrest of three Goan notables – the priests Pedro António Ribeiro and José Mariano Cardoso and the lawyer Eusébio Mariano Lourenço de Góis – plus a “luso-descendant” officer, Lt. Col. José de Assa Castello-Branco. On the night of May 9th, a group of around 400 to 500 armed individuals led by Pe. Pedro António Ribeiro and José de Assa attempted to incite a mutiny in the military barracks of Colvale. The uprising was swiftly quelled and Assa was apprehended, while Pe. Pedro António Ribeiro fled Goa. In the aftermath, the junta strongly repressed the indigenous elites of Bardez and expelled some of the colony's most prominent liberal officials from Goa.
