Azangaro rebellion 1737

Synopsis
The rebellion began in the province of Azángaro on May 25, 1736. About 400 indigenous people who periodically worked on the cattle ranches in the area joined forces to attack the town of Asillo with the intention of expelling the parish priest Manuel Arroyo and his assistant, who were denounced for the abuses they committed against them. When the corregidor of Azángaro went to restore order, he was hostilely received by armed Indians and managed to escape with difficulty, although he later returned and successfully secured the entire tribute and the quota of ‘mitayos’ (forced laborers). However, the insurrection would erupt again in Azángaro the following year when a large-scale conspiracy began to incubate, orchestrated by several ‘indios principales’ and ‘curacas’ (indigenous leaders) of the ‘panacas’ (noble lineages) of Cuzco and neighboring provinces. It was led by the curaca of Azángaro, Andrés Ignacio Cápac Condori, and also supported by the prestigious curaca from Cuzco, José Orco Huaranca. In November 1737, after some violent events occurred in Azángaro, the rebel plot was discovered, and the authorities dismantled it quickly. Eighty-nine indigenous leaders from Cuzco and other 39 from Azángaro were arrested, including Cápac Condori, who was captured in Omasuyos. He was accused of planning a regional-scale uprising against Spanish rule.
