Caranja uprising 1613

Synopsis
Situated on the Bay of Bombay, near the modern city of Mumbai, the district (cassabe) of Caranja was the southernmost area of the jurisdiction of Bassein in the northern province of the Portuguese Estado da Índia. Separated from the mainland to the east by a narrow marshy canal, the district's relatively peripheral location placed it on the frontline of the conflicts between the Portuguese and the Sultanate of Ahmednagar in the 16th and early 17th centuries. It was in the context of these conflicts that the uprising of 1613 took place. According to the Portuguese chronicler António Bocarro, the rebellion resulted from covert contacts between the Muslim population of Caranja and their counterparts in the Ahmednagar territories. The revolt began in the first months of the year when around 15 Muslim inhabitants led by Malik Rurane entered the fort of São Miguel de Caranjá and assassinated the Portuguese captain, Baltazar Rebelo de Almeida, and his family. The rebels took over the fort but were quickly overpowered and massacred. The Portuguese garrison was reinforced by troops sent from Goa. In the months that followed, several Muslim residents were killed and their presence in Caranja and the neighboring island of Salsete was increasingly restricted.
