Huamalies revolt 1776

Synopsis
This revolt took place in the province of Huamalíes, a frontier territory located in the central Andes of Peru, a short distance from the edge of the eastern jungle. In this area, various local revolts had already occurred in the previous decades, intensified since the mid-century by the increasing abuses of the doctrinal priests, the corregidores, and the local bureaucracy. On December 28, 1776, in the early hours of the morning, the tensions accumulated in previous years against the corregidor Domingo de la Cajiga led to a violent popular outbreak. A predominantly indigenous crowd set fire to his ‘obraje’ (industrial complex) in the town of Quivilla at three different points, destroying 17 workshops with warehouses full of products, in addition to killing him and his brother. Cajiga concentrated resentment for his double role as corregidor and industrialist, and therefore as a labor exploiter and promoter of forced distribution of goods of his own production. In the judicial proceedings opened after the events, several indigenous people and mestizos were arrested, as well as two residents of the nearby town of Llacta, probably creoles. In addition, accusations were made against José Parrilla, the priest of Quivilla, of being one of the main instigators of the uprising through the drafting of letters and the summoning of people with public announcements.
